Yes We CAN

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”                                                     – Margaret Mead

In school the French and Russia Revolutions and the Indian Struggle for Independence are merely chapters in history books. Often students aren’t able to relate these significant occurrences of times gone-by to the current state of affairs. I was no exception either. Since we were born independent and visibly shielded from the big bad world out there, the relevance of a fight for liberation or even a fundamental right seemed too farfetched. But as I grew up and got acquainted with the real world I realized how important it is to infuse these in the young minds; to let them know that ordinary people can overcome obstacles to create a better world for humankind. To let them know that we have it in us to face all kinds of adversity, small or big, and emerge victorious from it. These pages from history teach us and inspire us to fight for our beliefs, our society whenever either is under attack.

Just pick up any newspaper or login to any news website and you will find news about girls being brutally murdered and raped, news of politicians swindling huge amounts of money and still walking out free from the shackles of justice while thousands and thousands of fellow Indians fail to make ends meet. Every other day the prices of petrol or even the basic commodities of life are sky rocketing. Life is tough these days. We have to fight for existence every minute of every day. It may be the fight of a child in the school playground against a bully, the fight of a tortured daughter-in-law against her in-laws or just the fight to muster up courage to say no to those violating our self respect. The fact is everywhere you look; the society and the world seem to be crumbling down.

  1. People are so busy with their lives, they don't really have time to indulge in history. Most people would rather watch a Bollywood movie then to pick up a book on history. It's just a faint memory for some and just a chapter for the students.

  2. hey i can relate to it..though am an engineer i have always loved history. When i read a history book, its not just a bunch of dry chapters but the life of people of that era that comes to light..I read your complete post on the youth express..gr8 writing..keep it up!!

  3. very well written … though history was never one of my fav subjects in school …its now that I love going back and reading what ever I had missed !

  4. You always hit upon relevant issues & write so well about them–you are at least trying to rouse public about them….thanks a lot.

  5. Nice, but add to it the bangalore traffic and rising prices of basic commodities.
Good writing. Will come back for more.

  6. citizen activism has a new tool in the form of social media, and this is one way that we can keep up the momentum. the fervor with which citizens took to the streets to fight against corruption seems to have withered away. perhaps an effort to bring all right thinking people together is what is needed to ensure that the waves of change continually strike the walls of the powerful and the indifferent. great post, nabanita.
