Book Recommendation 16 #Reads

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is this week’s book recommendation.

Genre: Historical Fiction

Why should you pick it up?

If you have been following my reading journey on social media then you know how much I love historical fiction, especially those set during the World War. This book, the book thief, is one of my absolute favorites.

The book is actually narrated by death (Yes!) and it might be slightly confusing, to begin with, but if you hang on and keep reading you will find this to be one of the most wholesome reading experiences ever.

It is the story of a little girl, Liesel Meminger, as she tries to make sense of the war, of what is happening to the Jews, to her, her friends, of death and more. What I like most is that you get to see the world through the eyes of a little girl, a girl in Germany in the middle of one of the worst human tragedies of history.

The relationships between the characters are also so wonderfully and intricately sketched. The bond between Liesel Meminger and her papa, Hans Hubermann, will remind you of the bond between Atticus and Scout.

Read this book and you’ll realize how beautiful the written word can be. And once you are done reading it, do watch the movie on the same. It is very well made as well.

Blurb

Trying to make sense of the horrors of World War II, Death relates the story of Liesel–a young German girl whose book-stealing and storytelling talents help sustain her family and the Jewish man they are hiding, as well as their neighbors.
