#MommyTalks | One Year As A Working Mom

Last month in the middle of meetings and literally running against time to complete everything on my To-Do list for the day, I realised that it has been a year since I got back to work post my maternity leave. One year as a working mom. One year already. Hard to believe but I had survived. Unbelievably believable, if you ask me.

A year has passed since life became a bit more hectic than it was before. One year since I began juggling chores, deadlines and more. Well, much more than I used to juggle earlier. One year of balancing the role of a mother while being a working woman at the same time. One year living not only for my child but for my dreams as well. It has been a year since I donned the hat of a working mum. And as exhausting, stressful and demanding as it may have been, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

It has been anything but easy in spite of the support system that I have. But there is this sense of accomplishment at the end of every day which I love. So, I think I do deserve a pat on my back for making it this far. Thousands of miles more to go but nevertheless. I know things haven’t been smooth at work but I still made it and that feeling is what gives me the strength to go on. Of course, there are bad days when I just want to hole up at home. But I haven’t given up yet and that’s reason enough to celebrate. I realise how important it is for me to acknowledge that myself. Self-compassion, after all, is essential to our well-being. So, good job, Naba!

As women, we generally forget to do that though we really must. We tend to downplay our accomplishments a lot. We always give credit to someone else or shy away from genuine praise. While it’s good to share credit, it’s completely wrong to brush our own hard work under the carpet. We need to be mindful of how much we do. And trust me, we do a lot. That’s why I decided to toast myself for making it through all those early mornings, long tiring days and exhausting nights. Raise a glass for being a mother, a woman, a working woman, a blogger and so much more. It’s not easy playing many roles, especially when the roles demand a lot of physical work apart from the mental workload.

It was a eureka moment. A moment when I was aware of how much I take on and do. Mindful, really. It is so important for mums, working or otherwise, to acknowledge just how much we do. Focus on the done list. Instead, what we tend to do is give ourselves a hard time for what we couldn’t without realising how much more we have done already. This kind of self-boost is good for it makes you feel good. And everybody knows it becomes a little easier to deal with life when we feel good about ourselves. Why wait for someone else to appreciate us? When we spare no time to be harsh on our mistakes, why hesitate in rewarding ourselves for all that we do?

Truth be told, women do more than their fair share of work at home and at the office. We work tirelessly at all times. And often without any rewards or praise. It’s almost as if we are expected to be selfless, keep giving without being given even a kind word in return. Well, that’s wrong. That’s why every once in a while we need to make a list of all that we do and take care of. It helps. Trust me it helps.

Every day before going to bed I think about all that I have accomplished during the day. It may be something as trifling as dusting that neglected corner or adding one more paragraph to my work in progress but it’s an accomplishment none the less.

Tell me, are you mindful of all that you do every day and do you stop to appreciate yourself for that?

  1. I guess I never appreciate myself and you are right that as women we need to feel happy about what we got done right instead of what went wrong!
Congrats on being a working mom and making it work beautifully:)
    Nice to connect with you!

  2. Wow one year already! Congratulations 🙂 you totally deserve that toast… Juggling work and baby is never easy and you are doing a great job. Yes, women tend to feel that there’s always something more that can be done, but they don’t realize how much they have already accomplished.
    Another thoughtfully written post.

  3. Kudos, Naba! I raise a toast to you. Like you said, we need to pat ourselves on the back more often for doing all that we do. I see women who work professionally working so hard juggling home, baby and work. It is gruelling and it is a huge achievement. You are doing such a fine job with M and your work.

Cheers to all of us . May our tribe increase .

  5. An year already!! So cool. You have survived the most difficult bit so wonderfully, now there are good times ahead. I am sure you did a great job by playing all the roles. Keep patting yourself. Women must do this without waiting for others to do that for them.

  6. I am very happy to read this post. Yes, it is worth it in every way to take a moment, look back at the starting post and pat our back for how far we have come as mothers. It is always for ourselves to do. Congratulations on completing one year as a working mother. There are many more anniversaries to come in the future 🙂

On a diff note how did u manage being away from kid in new days ? Write a post on that too. By supp system do u mean parents or day care etc!
I m still trying to find a suitable arrangement 🙁 and getting stressed

  9. Congratulations, Naba. I’ve told you this before, but it bears repeating, I truly admire women like you, who manage to balance it all and still make time for themselves. Here’s to strong women raising great kids!

  10. We don’t appreciate ourselves enough. Even though my son is grown, I’m juggling a lot of things right now – elderly mother in law, disabled brother in law, entering into my senior years – time to give myself a pat on the back.
